LONE PINE TRAIL BUILDERS

ANGUS MATHESON: OWNER/OPERATOR

Angus is the owner and operator of Lone Pine Trail Builders. He grew up on his grandfather’s farm, where a strong work ethic was instilled in him by his family from a young age. As the lead operator, he draws on skills he developed running equipment early in life and has carried that experience into every project since.

Angus is also a local artist based in Whitefish, Montana. He combines his artistry, attention to detail, and extensive background in trail building to create trails that flow naturally with the landscape and stand the test of time. His approach blends hard-earned practical skill with a creative eye, resulting in trails that are as functional as they are beautiful.

His background also includes:

  • General farm work, property maintenance, and stonemasonry.

  • A lifetime of trail work experience and a reputation as a skilled excavator operator in both the trail building and landscaping industry

  • Equipment operation on kiwi, orange, and persimmon farms in New Zealand

  • Ride and equipment operation for Mahons Amusements, a traveling carnival in New Zealand 😄 (just a fun fact)

  • Youth Crew Leader for the Montana Conservation Corps

  • Adult Crew Leader for the Montana Conservation Corps

  • Outdoor Educator and youth backpacking guide for the Montana Outdoor Science School

  • Outdoor educator training with the National Outdoor Leadership School (NOLS)

  • Owner and artist behind Achy Bones Collective LLC, blending his love for art, snowboarding, and mountain culture

  • 10 years of Trail Building, Trail Layout/Design, Landscaping, Hardscaping, and Forestry experience in Whitefish, MT

  • Retail associate and shop tech for Stumptown Snowboards

  • Former Owner/Operator, and track builder for Glacier RC Raceway

Bringing all these experiences together, Angus approaches every trail project with craftsmanship, creativity, and care for the land and community that make Montana special.

ANASTASIA RODAK:

With over ten years of trail building experience, Ana brings a practical, hands-on approach to every project she touches. Her roots in trail work run deep — from the rugged wilderness of the Adirondacks to the high alpine backcountry of Grand Teton National Park and now the Flathead Valley of Montana.

Ana’s background includes remote wilderness trail construction, maintenance, and design in the Adirondacks, where she specialized in sustainable corridor clearing, water and run-off management, and structural elements like bridges, staircases and drainage features. She’s skilled with a chainsaw, holding an NCSP certification for bucking and falling, and pairs her forestry skills with careful planning and a selective, efficient style that puts longevity first.

In Wyoming’s Grand Teton National Park, Ana built stone retaining walls and backcountry bridges, sometimes at elevations over 10,000 feet, traveling and hauling materials entirely on foot. She’s assisted with complex logistics like packhorse supply runs and helicopter operations for remote trail crews, ensuring that even the most remote areas stay connected and cared for.

Now based in Montana’s Flathead Valley, Ana combines old-school trail wisdom with a modern eye for detail, balancing the (present day) tendency for overbuilt trails with a minimalist, functional design style that lets the landscape lead the way.

When she’s not building trail, Ana is usually out watching the skies. She’s an avid birder and dedicated volunteer with Montana Wild Wings, a raptor rehabilitation center where she cares for injured raptors and helps handle education birds at public events. Whether she’s teaching people about wild birds or scanning the treetops with her binoculars, Ana brings the same care and respect for wild spaces and the creatures that depend on them to every part of her life.

Her deep experience, technical skill, and steady boots-on-the-ground ethic help shape Lone Pine Trail Builders’ commitment to building trails that last and feel like they belong exactly where they are.
